September & October Favorites

Even though it hasn’t felt all the way like fall where I am, I’ve still been loving it! I’m sleeping cozily under my covers, I’m shaking the dust off my sweaters, I’m making heart eyes at my thermostat which hasn’t had to kick on in over a month.

So I’m feeling good going into these favorites, let’s see what we’ve got.

Books

I found The Big Relief by David Zahl linked in a newsletter I subscribe to and immediately *added to cart.* It feels like such a necessary book right now and I highlighted my way through the whole thing.

Notes on Your Sudden Disappearance by Alison Espach was the Bad on Paper podcast’s September book club pick. It tells the story of the lead up and aftermath of a family tragedy, but does so in a very unique and at times humorous and charming way.

The Names by Florence Knapp will easily go down as one of my top reads of the year. It is told in three timelines, each sparking off a mother choosing a different name for her child. I was hooked from minute one and marveled at the way the timelines both differed and connected.

.

Podcasts

I recently subscribed to I’m Fun Now with Sazan Hendricks, which is an encouraging and easy listen, aimed at women of faith, that I’ve especially liked listening to in the mornings while getting ready. And I’ve been binging Every Single Album, which breaks down new music releases.

.

TV Shows

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, based on Amanda Knox’s memoirs, was a truly wild ride. Having only heard random facts about the case in passing and then watching a Hallmark movie made about it years ago, this was a really interesting deep dive told from Amanda’s perspective. (find it on Hulu)

The Runarounds understandably has an Outer Banks vibe, as it was created by the same people. It’s about a group of teenagers who start a band (and are an actual band in real life) and the struggles of trying to get their start in the industry. It was a super fun, easy watch! (find it on Amazon Prime)

I also finally got around to watching Running Point, which tells the story of a woman who inherits her family’s professional basketball team and has to find her place in the world of sports. It was funny and cute and had a charming cast of characters. (find it on Netflix)

I’ve also been loving season 2 of Nobody Wants This and season 4 of Special Forces.

.

Documentaries

On a random Sunday last month, I sat down to do a fall craft and turned on Mr. & Mrs. Murder in the background. It’s a true crime story based around the disappearance of a man in Florida and it was truly a WILD ride from start to finish. (find it on Hulu)

.

Movies

I was excited to see Oh, Hi! come to streaming because I missed its run in theaters. It follows a couple on their first weekend away together and the hilarious chaos that ensues after they have a disagreement. It was outlandish and fun and stars Logan Lerman and Molly Gordon.

My mom and I saw Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale in theaters, and it again made me want to go back and watch the show. I saw both of the feature film productions set in that world and loved them, so the series is definitely moving higher and higher on my list.

And finally, Truth & Treason is a movie that I have not stopped thinking about. It tells the true story of 16-year-old Helmuth Hübener who would go down as one of the youngest resistance fighters against Hitler in World War II. It is a story of otherworldly courage that kept me so still in my theater seat that my Fitbit thought I was asleep. I would HIGHLY recommend!!

The Art of Loving by Olivia Dean

Far Country by Ellie Holcomb

Man’s Best Friend by Sabrina Carpenter

The Life of a Showgirl by Taylor Swift

Space of the Heart by GoldFord

Artists

Some artists I’ve been enjoying lately are:

Callahan, @callahanccallahan – a ceramicist currently on the road to making 1000 mugs.

Anton, @byantonlangreiter – a fabric artist currently working on “The Greens Project,” which are pieces based on moments in sports.

Anna David & Daniel Rueda, @anniset – visual artists whose work is so whimsical and fun.

Werner Bronkhorst, @werner_bronkhorst – a contemporary artist whose large works on canvas always stop me in my tracks.

.

Links

I loved this read about the (at times) toxic nature of self-help books

And this read about how we’re putting too much of our lives online

I also enjoyed this timelapse video of a pumpkin seed becoming a pumpkin

And have been really liking this newsletter that links art available for purchase.

.

Food & Recipes

My sister put me on to GoNanas banana bread and it has quickly become my favorite thing to bake for a week of breakfasts. They have a handful of flavors, and each one seems to be better than the last, which is made even more impressive by the fact that they are both vegan and gluten free. I buy mine at Target but they are also available at Sprouts.

I also love these pretzels I found at Trader Joes. The comparison I’ve been making is the cookies and cream Hershey bars, which are controversial to some, but I personally find delicious.

.

Misc.

And finally, if there’s one thing I’ve been addicted to over the last couple of months it has been the Globle Game my mom introduced me to. It is kind of like Wordle, but with countries, which sounds hard but for me has been so fun and educational. It’s my favorite way to turn my brain on in the morning!
