More Like a River Than a Statue

For my birthday a few years ago, my sister got me a letter board, and it has since become home to a quote and/or idea that inspires me. I often like to choose one at the beginning of the year or in light of a big change, to give my mind something to focus on when it strays toward panic.

Last year, the quote on my board was from David D. Burns, “You are more like a river than a statue.”

My thirties have very much felt like a period of rediscovery, of learning and unlearning things about myself. I have felt at times like I am starting from scratch, getting to know the person and body that comprise me, and this quote encourages me that I will never reach a point when I am completely stuck. When I stop growing or become something set in stone, never to be changed.

I will never be something concrete, collecting dust and moss and weathering away with time.

I am forever moving and changing, carving a new path, picking things up and dropping things off along the way.

I am a river, fluid and free to go and go and go. And so are you.

I wish you all well on your run, I hope you travel far and wide and become more and more of you with each passing mile.

  1. I love that you’re quoting David Burns! One of my past supervisors was his student and I have a David Burns book sitting on my shelf right now! Lol

    1. No way! haha that’s amazing! Which book is it?

      1. Feeling Good Handbook! Though my psychologist friends and I have been joking about getting the entire set, maybe a Feeling Great or a Feeling Ecstatic Handbook as the sequels 😂

      2. Hahaha I need a copy of “feeling ecstatic” 😂
