Hello and welcome back to another edition of All the Good Things, a monthly series where I highlight all the good things (get it?) that happen in each 30-day (or so) span. I hope it can be a reminder that amongst all the well known bad, there is a lot of undercover good happening in our world.
Proud dad moment today. My 10yr old son saw a new kid sitting by himself. Another friend and he decided to hang out with him over lunch. He got this lovely note at the end of the day😢❤️ pic.twitter.com/b1MNgvMeK7
I'd like to teach y'all a Southern phrase that will help you get off a phone/Zoom/Facetime call or you don't want to be on anymore but don't have an excuse to leave. Let me introduce you to the power of "Well, let me let you go"
23) This woman created an app to help those with special needs make friends
24) This woman made a good point:
A shark could swim faster than me, but I could probably run faster than a shark. So in a triathlon, it would all come down to who is the better cyclist.
I usually put the same intro before my monthly “good things” posts, but this one felt a little different. January was rough. And it seemed to last way longer than 31 days. But even amongst all the bad, as always, there were good things. And even though I might have dragged my feet a little bit to collect them, they were still there, and they still filled my heart with all that good stuff.
So here’s to January, the marathon that it was, and here’s to February, who we hope jumps at the chance to be far better.
7) The manager of Athletes Village for the 2020 Olympics revealed the bed frames are made of sturdy cardboard, making them recyclable after the Olympics and Paralympic Games.
After more then 7 years living in a small garage that was the only thing my mom could afford, we finally got a small apartment, this was my little brothers reaction pic.twitter.com/CJRfzL4ifP

2) This boy called 911 to get help on his homework
Our dispatchers never know what the next call might be.They train for many emergency situations, homework help is not one they plan for. We don't recommend 911 for homework help but this dispatcher helped a young boy out and brightened his day.@PoliceOne@apbweb@wlfi@WTHRcompic.twitter.com/w3qCYfJP7O
8) Roma actress, Yalitza Martinez, was nominated for her very first Academy Award
Sumamente feliz, cuando desperté hoy tan temprano, (claro, a la hora de aquí) no esperaba está noticia, gracias Ale A. García y @marielmmayorga por despertarme 😊 pic.twitter.com/PdziTnDKxh
18) This woman gave us all an incredible life hack
LIFE HACK — if you ever feel sad think of an animal, any animal, and go to amazon and search “plush *animal*” and read the reviews of the most popular one literally a guaranteed mood boost everytime pic.twitter.com/IK2W0b5rq3
23) Actor Patton Oswalt turned an online attack into an opportunity for outreach
Aw, man. This dude just attacked me on Twitter and I joked back but then I looked at his timeline and he’s in a LOT of trouble health-wise. I’d be pissed off too. He’s been dealt some shitty cards — let’s deal him some good ones. Click and donate — just like I’m about to. https://t.co/6zRdZ430WG
So The Pig and I do our stretching routine together these mornings; we take turns while the other coaches. Here we demonstrate the "Upward Facing Dog". Or "The Cobra" to the Pig. [ he's more Yoga than Pilates.] 'Just 3 more Sam !''Yes coach.' Omm. pic.twitter.com/dM3CvMNdcS
2016 seemed to be a rough year. Both globally, nationally, and, for millions, personally. So by the time December 31st came rolling around, just about everyone was ready to see it go up in flames.
On January 1st however, as we rang in a new year with new possibilities, suddenly I saw an influx of positivity towards 2016. Videos and articles alike began to share the undercover good things that happened amongst the well-known bad. And while this made me happy, it also felt like too little, too late.
Because yes, it’s true that 2016 was riddled in hardships and hate, but there were also mounds of love and kindness and I wonder if we could have made the year better if we spent more time focusing on the good rather than the bad.
I remember seeing posts in September of people saying they couldn’t wait for the year to be over. But they were talking about it being a wash when there were over 100 days left. This got me thinking. How many good things went unnoticed in those 100 days? How many smile inducing, belly laughing, happy-crying things happened when so much of the world was throwing in the towel?
Which brings me here, to now, where I hope to showcase those good things, so they no longer go unnoticed. So, I’m making it a tradition at the end of every month, to post a collection of good things that happened within those 30 or so days.
I hope they make you smile. I hope they make you laugh. I hope they make you cry. Honestly, I hope they make you do all of those things at once, because sometimes, when the world gets us down the best thing we can do is smilacry, smlaughcry? I don’t know. I just think sometimes we need to feel all the feels that are different, better feels than the feels we’ve been drowning in lately. You know what I mean?
So here’s to 2017. Let’s try our best make it good, and make sure to notice when we succeed. To kick us off, here are 31 good things that happened in January:
1) This high school kicker became the only female player to score a point in a California State Championship game.
